City Hall Garden of Remembrance

The Garden of Remembrance at Belfast City Hall is defined by a large, circular stone cenotaph surrounded by a meticulously kept, sunken lawn. Created to honor those who died during the First World War, the site originally faced criticism for its placement within the grounds of the seat of local government. When the memorial was first unveiled in nineteen twenty-four, some residents argued the space felt too detached from the public, yet it remains the primary site for annual commemorations in the city.
