The green copper dome of Belfast City Hall rises above Donegall Square, marking the center of the city. Architects finished the building in nineteen oh six on the former site of the White Linen Hall. When the city earned its official status in eighteen eighty-eight, leaders wanted a structure that projected wealth and industrial power. They commissioned Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas, who filled the interior with intricate Italian marble and stained glass to showcase the prosperity of a global manufacturing hub.
