Bakehouse Close

Bakehouse Close earns its name from the seventeenth century, when it housed the bakery belonging to the Incorporation of Bakers. The alleyway narrows significantly, flanked by stone walls that still bear the soot and wear of hundreds of years. The most striking feature is the archway entry that leads into a courtyard, guarded by the original lintel stones carved with the baker’s guild symbols. During the sixteen hundreds, the residents here watched the royal processions along the Canongate toward the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
