The Tolbooth Tavern anchors the corner of the Canongate with a clock projecting over the sidewalk on a long iron arm. Built in fifteen ninety-one, this stone structure served as the administrative heart of the old Canongate burgh. It functioned as a courthouse and a prison for debtors and petty criminals. On the second floor, the town council met to decide the fate of locals. Today, the heavy walls hold a public house, but the original council chamber remains intact upstairs.
