Water of Leith Weir

The Water of Leith Weir is a wide, terraced stone cascade that stretches across the river in the heart of Dean Village. It once powered the many grain mills that lined these banks for centuries. In eighteen twenty-six, a massive flood destroyed the nearby bridge, but the weir held firm against the surging water. Grain merchants relied on this heavy masonry to maintain the river flow for their grinding stones long after the wheels stopped turning.
