The White Hart Inn wears a white-painted facade and an exterior lantern that distinguishes it from the surrounding stone buildings of the Grassmarket. It stands on foundations dating back to fifteen sixteen, making it one of the oldest pub sites in Edinburgh. Poet Robert Burns stayed in the inn during his final visit to the city in seventeen ninety-one. Later, the infamous grave robbers Burke and Hare reportedly prowled the nearby closes for victims to sell to the local medical school.
