The Alemany Maze is a sprawling, multi-level tangle of concrete overpasses where three major highways merge at the edge of Bernal Heights. It was built in the early nineteen fifties as the city’s primary gateway for freight trucks entering San Francisco from the south. The structure forces drivers into a series of sharp, sweeping curves that hug the hillside. Engineers designed it to snake around the local topography, creating an artificial valley of gray pillars and roaring exhaust beneath the residential streets.
