The bright, oversized red archway marking the entrance to Mendell Plaza functions as a gateway to the Third Street corridor. Named for George Mendell, a nineteenth-century surveyor who mapped parts of this district, the plaza serves as a central gathering point for the Bayview neighborhood. In nineteen ninety-eight, the city cleared this site of a former gas station to create a public space. A local artist designed the arch, which stands as the most recognizable feature against the skyline today.
