Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood

The Victorian houses along Haight Street feature bay windows and intricate wooden trim that survived the nineteen oh six earthquake and fire. In the mid-sixties, these low-rent apartments drew thousands of young people to what became the epicenter of the counterculture. By nineteen sixty-seven, the intersection of Haight and Ashbury hosted the Summer of Love. Mary Kasper, a local resident, organized a free store and a free food program to feed the influx of people living in these hallways and rooms.
