The house at seven hundred ten Ashbury Street is a plain, three-story Victorian with a modest bay window and a front door painted purple. In the spring of nineteen sixty-seven, Janis Joplin and the members of the Grateful Dead lived here. They shared the space as a commune while the neighborhood became the epicenter of the Summer of Love. Police raided the residence in October that year, arresting three people for drug possession and sparking a frantic standoff with local reporters.
