The storefront at seventeen thirty-five Haight Street features a modest, weathered facade that separates it from the neighboring Victorian buildings. In nineteen sixty-seven, David Smith, a young doctor, opened the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic here with little more than donated medical supplies and a folding table. He aimed to treat the thousands of young people arriving for the Summer of Love who lacked basic medical care. He operated on a shoestring budget, relying on volunteer physicians to staff the clinic nightly.
