1970 San Francisco Police Department Park Station bombing

The Park Station police building features a prominent, low-slung concrete exterior tucked near the edge of Golden Gate Park. On a February night in nineteen seventy, a bomb shattered the station's windows and sent shrapnel into the watch commander’s desk, killing Sergeant Brian McDonnell. The Weather Underground claimed responsibility for the blast, marking a violent escalation in their campaign against police authority. Investigators found a mercury switch trigger in the debris, leaving behind a scar that permanently changed how the station operated.
