Corner of Haight & Ashbury

The intersection of Haight and Ashbury features a pair of Victorian storefronts with rounded corner entrances, painted in bright, contrasting colors. In the spring of nineteen sixty-seven, these corners anchored the Summer of Love. A local shopkeeper named Ron Thelin used his bookstore, the Psychedelic Shop, to provide literature and advice to thousands of teenagers arriving in the city. Thelin eventually shuttered the business and burned his own money in the middle of the street, walking away from the movement he helped start.
