Six hundred thirty-five Ashbury Street is a Victorian townhouse with a dark gray exterior and a distinctive bay window that hangs over the sidewalk. In the nineteen sixties, Janis Joplin lived here, often sitting on the front steps with a bottle of Southern Comfort. While the neighborhood turned into the epicenter of the Summer of Love, Joplin retreated to this space to escape the chaos of the streets. She left behind her signed lease, which still hangs inside for the current residents.
