McLaren Lodge

The McLaren Lodge features a distinctive, sprawling stone facade topped with a steeply pitched shingled roof. Built in eighteen ninety-six, it served as the home and office for John McLaren, the man who spent fifty-three years transforming these sand dunes into a forest. McLaren stubbornly refused to move out even as the city pressured him to retire, eventually winning a lifetime residency in the lodge. A massive Monterey Cypress tree still grows through the roof of the original carriage house porch.
