California Volunteers (sculpture)

The California Volunteers sculpture is a powerful bronze memorial dedicated to the soldiers from California who fought in the Spanish-American War. Created by the renowned sculptor Douglas Tilden, the monument was unveiled in August 1906, just months after the devastating earthquake and fire that reshaped San Francisco. Tilden, who lost his hearing at the age of four, became one of the city's most important artists of the era and infused his work with a distinct, dramatic intensity.
