Before you reach the sand, you are standing on ground that once functioned as the Golden Gate Milk Ranch. In the eighteen fifties, this land was settled by John Henry Baker, who gave the beach its name. His enterprise relied on the nearby Lobos Creek, which was dammed in eighteen fifty-eight to create the first permanent water supply for the city of San Francisco. Today, that same creek remains the primary water source for the entire Presidio.
