Sunnyside Playground Park

A steep, paved slope breaks the neighborhood grid here, bordered by a high concrete wall that creates a sunken, quiet bowl in the middle of the city. This land became public in the nineteen thirties when the city traded private lots for this hillside. During the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration built the stone retaining walls and the original ball field. They leveled the earth by hand, moving tons of rock and soil to carve a level ground out of the sharp incline.
