You are approaching a place with a past far more crowded than the quiet hills suggest. Before the manicured lawns and the scenic fairways existed, this entire area was known as the Golden Gate Cemetery. Established in eighteen sixty-eight, it served as a final resting place for nearly thirty thousand people, including immigrants, sailors, and the city’s indigent population. While the city ordered these graves to be relocated to the town of Colma in the early twentieth century, the task was incomplete. Thousands of individuals remain in their original resting places beneath the park grounds today.
