Captain George Carey House

historic

The Captain George Carey House stands out for its high, clipped gable roof and the distinctive wrap around porch that catches the island breeze. George Carey, a sea captain who made his fortune in the lucrative wrecking industry, built this home in the eighteen eighties. He famously insisted on using salvaged materials from shipwrecks to construct the frame. Local legend claims the front staircase once belonged to a vessel that ran aground on the Florida Reef, repurposed by the captain himself.
