The Key West Historic Memorial Sculpture Garden features thirty-six bronze busts of individuals who shaped the island’s history, arranged around a central fountain. It occupies the former site of the island’s original customs house. In nineteen eighty-two, Key West briefly declared itself the Conch Republic to protest a federal blockade. The garden serves as a permanent gathering of the figures behind that independent spirit, including wreckers, cigar makers, and the man who reportedly first flew the flag of the new republic.
