Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A.

The black, red, and yellow painted concrete buoy sits at the corner of South and Whitehead streets, marking the ninety-mile distance to Cuba. This massive marker replaced a small, easily stolen wooden sign that once stood nearby. City officials installed this buoy in nineteen eighty-three to discourage tourists from walking off with the original markers. It now serves as the primary destination for travelers reaching the end of the Florida Keys, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico.
