Mallory Square

The red brick plaza of Mallory Square sits right at the edge of the water, marked by its wide, open harbor view and the steady stream of people gathering as the sun drops. It began as a utilitarian space where local wreckers stored salvaged goods from ships that foundered on the nearby reefs. By the eighteen nineties, the square served as a bustling shipping hub, but the activity shifted once the railroad arrived. Today, the square holds onto the tradition of the sunset celebration.
