Richard Peacon House

The Richard Peacon House stands out for its wraparound porches and distinct Bahamian-style architecture, a rarity in a neighborhood filled with more conventional wooden cottages. Richard Peacon, a grocery store owner, built this house in eighteen ninety-six with the profits from his bustling trade on Duval Street. During a hurricane in nineteen oh nine, Peacon famously lashed his house to the heavy trees nearby with steel cables to prevent it from sliding into the sea, and the house stayed put.
