The Hemingway Home and Museum

The Spanish colonial house in Upper Duval wears thick limestone walls quarried right from the island grounds. Ernest Hemingway bought this eighteen fifty-one mansion in nineteen thirty-one for eight thousand dollars. He wrote some of his best work here, including The Snows of Kilimanjaro, while sitting in a second-story studio reachable only by a catwalk from the main house. Today, the property hosts dozens of six-toed cats, many of them direct descendants of a poly-dactyl feline gifted to the author by a ship captain.
