Cornish Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church

The Cornish Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church is recognizable by its simple, white-painted wood frame and the steep, front-facing gable that sits squarely on its lot. This building houses one of the oldest African American congregations in Key West. It dates back to the eighteen sixties, when formerly enslaved people organized to establish a place for worship. The church eventually took the name of Reverend Samuel Cornish, a pioneer in the abolitionist movement who helped found the national A.M.E. Zion denomination.
