Originally built in the late nineteenth century as a private residence, it served as a home for members of the merchant class before transitioning into a guesthouse. When Captain George Carey occupied the space in the early nineteen hundreds, he oversaw a series of renovations that blended Victorian architecture with the practical demands of the humid climate.
