Lummus Park

The long stretch of palm trees and wide, flat grass fields sitting directly against the Atlantic Ocean identifies Lummus Park. It became the first public beach park in Miami Beach after the Lummus brothers donated the land in the nineteen thirties to encourage tourism. During the Second World War, the army used this green space for training exercises, and soldiers slept in the nearby beachfront hotels. The sand here still holds the deep ruts once carved by military trucks during those practice drills.
