The Miami Beach Community Church sits beneath a distinct, steeply pitched roof with a bell tower that rises above the surrounding neighborhood of Flamingo. It was the first church built in Miami Beach, completed in nineteen twenty-one, back when the city was still finding its identity as a tourist destination. During the nineteen twenty-six hurricane, the building served as the town’s primary shelter, housing residents who watched the storm peel the roof off the nearby elementary school while their sanctuary held firm.
