The three-story Mediterranean Revival mansion on Ocean Drive wears a mosaic of millions of tiles across its courtyard, featuring a medallion of the face of Medusa. Built in nineteen thirty by architect Alden Freeman, the house mimics the Casa de Colon in Santo Domingo, the home of Christopher Columbus's son. Gianni Versace bought the property in nineteen ninety-two, adding the south wing and the swimming pool lined with twenty-four karat gold tiles. He lived here until his death on the front steps in nineteen ninety-seven.
