Queens Beach is defined by the flat, submerged limestone shelf that keeps the surf calm and creates a natural pool near the shore. Before it became a public park, this stretch of sand was known as Kurio. In the nineteen twenties, Duke Kahanamoku and other members of the Hui Nalu surf club used this specific break to teach visitors how to ride waves. The reef protects the shallow water, making it a place where beginners learned the foundations of modern Hawaiian surfing.
