Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue

The bronze statue of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku stands with his arms spread wide, facing the surf of Waikiki Beach. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming and the man credited with spreading surfing to the world. In nineteen seventeen, he famously rescued eight fishermen from a capsized boat in heavy seas using his surfboard. The sculptor, Jan Gordon Fisher, cast the Duke in nineteen ninety to mark the centennial of his birth, capturing the man who remains Hawaii's most beloved ambassador.
