The seawall at Kuhio Beach creates a calm, shallow swimming pool sheltered from the crashing Pacific surf. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole once kept his home on this stretch of sand, and his name remains attached to the area. Before the concrete wall arrived in the early nineteen fifties, this beach suffered from intense erosion and jagged reef rocks that made entering the water a gamble. The wall tamed the tide, turning a treacherous shoreline into a protected basin for local families.
