The Breakers Hotel in Waikiki features a low, two-story cluster of bungalow-style buildings arranged around a central courtyard and swimming pool. When it opened in nineteen forty-eight, it offered a quiet alternative to the grand beachfront resorts of the time. The architect, George Hogan, designed the space with private lanais and louvered windows to invite the trade winds inside. It remains one of the few places in the district that still looks much as it did seventy years ago.
