Waikiki Wall

A concrete seawall extends into the Pacific Ocean, creating a calm, rectangular swimming area known as the Kapahulu Groin. It was constructed in nineteen twenty-seven to prevent beach erosion and provide a safe place for swimmers away from the heavy surf. Duke Kahanamoku used to stand on this wall to watch the waves, and generations of local kids have spent their afternoons jumping into the water from its flat, rock-paved edge. It holds the line against the tide every single day.
