The corner of State and Madison features a massive, terra-cotta building with a central rotunda that reaches deep into the structure. This is the former Marshall Field and Company store. In nineteen oh two, owner Marshall Field commissioned architect Daniel Burnham to design a building that could house the largest department store in the world. He wanted a space where shoppers could spend entire days, so he installed a vaulted glass ceiling made of over one million pieces of iridescent Favrile glass.
