The Chicago Picasso stands fifty feet tall in the center of Daley Plaza, a massive, rusted steel bird or woman or perhaps a dog, depending on who you ask. When it was unveiled in nineteen sixty-seven, city officials expected a public outcry over its abstract, non-traditional appearance. Instead, thousands of people gathered to watch the unveiling, and the sculpture became a permanent, daily fixture of the city. Picasso refused his one hundred thousand dollar commission, donating the work to the people of Chicago.
