West Calhoun Place is a narrow, nondescript alley tucked into the grid of the Loop. It bears the name of John C. Calhoun, the nineteenth-century politician and vice president, whose name also once graced one of Chicago’s major thoroughfares. When the city council renamed that street in the nineteen eighties due to Calhoun’s ardent defense of slavery, the name survived here in this hidden passage. It remains one of the few places in the city where his name still appears on a street sign.
