The Sazerac Bar occupies a corner of the Roosevelt Hotel marked by a long, mahogany counter and murals painted by Paul Ninas in the nineteen thirties. It serves as the namesake of the city’s official cocktail, a mix of rye whiskey, absinthe, and Peychaud’s Bitters. Huey Long, the populist governor and senator, famously bypassed the bar’s entrance to mix his own Ramos Gin Fizzes in the room behind the bar, often bringing his own bartender to ensure the drink met his standards.
