Cafe Maspero sits inside a three-story stucco building with a prominent iron balcony, positioned on the corner of Chartres and Saint Louis streets. This structure dates back to the late eighteenth century, built following the great fire of seventeen eighty-eight. It served as the original slave exchange for the city before eventually transforming into a bustling eatery. Patrons once conducted grim business under these same roof beams, but today the space is known for its fried catfish and muffulettas.
