Antonio Monteleone, a Sicilian shoemaker, bought the original commercial building in eighteen eighty-six to provide lodging for fellow travelers. He slowly expanded the footprint by buying adjacent properties until the hotel consumed nearly the entire block. Even today, the hotel remains owned and operated by the same family, five generations after Antonio first opened his doors.
