St. Stephen's Catholic Church

religious

The brick facade of Saint Stephen's features a steeple topped by a clock with a wooden hand, which once signaled to sailors in Boston Harbor. Designed by Charles Bulfinch, the architect of the Massachusetts State House, it served as the New North Church before becoming a Catholic parish in eighteen sixty-two. When city planners tried to tear the building down to widen the street in the nineteen sixties, local residents successfully fought to preserve the structure where their families had worshipped for generations.
