You are standing before a portrait of the rapper Nas, located on the corner of 21st Street and 40th Avenue. This mural sits directly across from the Queensbridge Houses, the sprawling public housing complex where the artist was raised. When the piece first appeared in 2016, Nas admitted that seeing his own face immortalized in such a way initially terrified him. He explained that in his neighborhood, murals are almost exclusively created to honor those who have passed away, and he feared the art signaled his own death to the public.
