Pier A Walkway

Pier A is the last remaining masonry pier in New York City. Constructed between 1884 and 1886, it was designed by engineer George Sears Greene Junior to serve as the headquarters for the city's Department of Docks and the Police Department's Harbor Patrol. The building's iconic clock tower was added in 1919 and dedicated as the first formal memorial to American servicemen who died in the First World War. For decades, the pier acted as a command center for harbor activity, later becoming the primary station for the fire department's marine division. Its distinct Victorian architecture and strategic location made it a vital gateway to Manhattan for visitors arriving by water.
