The Erickson Saloon features a block-long facade of cream-colored terra cotta, anchored by a prominent rounded corner entrance. August Erickson opened this establishment in eighteen eighty-three, and it grew into a sprawling operation boasting a floor tiled in silver dollars and a bar that stretched six hundred feet. Erickson recruited loggers with promises of job placements and cheap lodging. His basement trapdoor system allowed him to recruit—or shanghai—intoxicated sailors and laborers directly onto waiting ships in the Willamette River.
