Morris Memorial Building

The Morris Memorial Building features a distinct facade of cream-colored terracotta and dark brick, rising six stories above Fourth Avenue North. Built in nineteen twenty-three, it served as the headquarters for the National Baptist Convention. The building stands as a center of African American business and civil rights activity in Nashville. During the nineteen sixties, student leaders organized sit-ins from offices inside these walls, coordinating the desegregation of downtown lunch counters while legal teams drafted their cases on the floors above.
