Hume-Fogg Academic High School

The Collegiate Gothic building on Broadway features a massive stone clock tower that stands above the city skyline. It was the first public high school in Nashville, opening in nineteen twelve after the city consolidated its scattered school system into one location. The architect, William B. Ittner, designed the space with elaborate terra cotta gargoyles and arched windows. During the nineteen thirties, the school became a site for student-led protests against segregated busing, marking a period of intense social change within these stone walls.
