The three heavy, cream-colored concrete buildings on Cannon Street once formed the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority’s maintenance depot, but before that, they served a more industrial purpose. Built in the late nineteen twenties, this complex housed the Washington Manufacturing Company. Workers here produced overalls and workwear under the Mother’s Best brand, packing crates for shipment across the South. The massive sliding doors and exposed brick interiors remain, now hosting touring musicians and late-night crowds instead of heavy sewing machinery.
