The War Memorial Auditorium is a heavy block of Tennessee marble defined by the row of fourteen massive Doric columns lining its front. Built in nineteen twenty-five, it honors the Tennesseans who died in the First World War. Inside the courtyard, a bronze statue called Victory stands in the center of a reflecting pool. The sculptor Belle Kinney modeled the figure after a local soldier, and she insisted that the bronze be cast with the actual shell casings from the battlefields of France.
