Nashville Public Square Park

Nashville Public Square Park sits on a flat, open concrete expanse surrounded by municipal buildings, defined by its geometric grid of trees and the sunken memorial fountain at its center. This site served as the city’s primary commercial hub for over a century, where enslaved people were bought and sold until the Civil War. In eighteen fifty-six, a man named Robert Renfro was lynched here while a crowd of hundreds watched. The current park design commemorates this history through the stark, quiet arrangement of stone.
